Why No One Wants to Be Evangelical Anymore: In 12 Brief Acts

  1. When I was a freshman in high school, I went to Bible camp and learned from Dr. Dino (Kent Hovind) that the earth is 6,000 years old and that Adam and Eve were the first human beings.
    1. Kent Hovind was later imprisoned for nearly a decade because he believed his ministry was exempt from taxes, and then was convicted of beating his (second) wife.
  2. When I was a sophomore in high school, I read wildly popular books on sexual purity and dating by Joshua Harris.
    1. Harris is now an atheist who regrets publishing those books because of how much harm they’ve done to people’s lives and relationships.
  3. When I was a junior in high school, I listened to countless sermons on ethics and philosophy by the apologist Ravi Zacharias.
    1. Ravi Zacharias International Ministries is now closed, because Ravi forced his numerous massage therapists to masturbate him.
  4. When I was a senior in high school, I heard a captivating presentation by Liberty Seminary President Ergun Caner on Focus on the Family about his conversion from Islam to Christianity.
    1. Focus on the Family pulled the talk when they learned most of it was made up, and Ergun was fired from Liberty, and then fired again from being President of another Christian school for racism and sexting staff.
  5. When I was a freshman in college, I wrote a book defending the five points of Calvinism that was endorsed by the apologist James R. White.
    1. James White covered up his father’s rape of his sister, has a fake doctorate, and now spends most days posting transphobic, racist, and institutionally paranoid content on social media.
  6. When I was a sophomore in college, I went to a conference in Minnesota hosted by Francis Schaeffer’s ministry.
    1. Francis beat his wife and abused his family in various ways, as his (now atheist) son testifies.
  7. When I was a junior in college, friends of mine began watching the television series “19 kids and counting.”
    1. One of those kids was Josh Duggar, a former executive for Family Research Council (which my mom worked for, for years), who molested five girls (including his sisters) and is now in prison for child pornography.
  8. 19 Kids and Counting featured a family inspired by the family teachings of Bill Gothard.
    1. Gothard stepped down in 2014 when 30 of his sexual victims came forward.
  9. A couple months after graduating college, I became a youth pastor and was told to read a book on humility by C. J. Mahaney.
    1. Mahaney was removed from his position because of his not so humble approach to ministry.
  10. In the same year, I was encouraged by “The Gospel Coalition” to watch their videos and content produced by pastor Mark Driscoll.
    1. Mark was forced out of his own denomination for various abuses, and in 2021 Christianity Today did an entire podcast series on his abuses.
  11. A year later in 2012, I became founding faculty of John Witherspoon College, which prided itself on classical liberal arts, quality scholarship, and engaging professors, and also co-authored the faculty manual and its statement on academic freedom.
    1. I was fired in 2018 for my publications advocating women in ministry
  12. A few years later, the President of JWC unilaterally hired the manager of the Glendive Dinosaur museum, which featured 6,000 year old dinosaur bones and King James Bibles behind glass, as a science professor.
    1. That science faculty member is now serving life in prison for sexually assaulting his two sons.
